These are multi-purpose, functionalized products that enable researchers to modify virtually any molecule, large or small, with carbohydrates via simple discrete, monodisperse polyethylene glycol (PEG) or alkyl linker/spacer systems. In contrast to traditional alkyl linker/spacers, PEG linker/spacers are water soluble and amphiphilic which reduces linker hydrophobic interactions with macromolecules and surfaces.

In nature, glucuronidation is one of the main phase 2 metabolic pathways by which an organism transforms a small molecule drug or xenobiotic into a more water-soluble substance which may be responsible for a drugās therapeutic affect but certainly enable its detoxification and further excretion. Glucuronides are formed enzymatically by the UDP-Glucuronosyltransferases which have been reported active in the liver, kidneys, epithelial cells of the lower gastrointestinal tract and the brain.

In nature, protein glycosylation, forming glycosylated proteins or glycopeptides, is a fundamental posttranslational modification process that controls protein shape, half-life and essential biological pathways ranging from protein trafficking to cell adhesion. Glycoamino acids are the basic sites of protein glycosylation, most commonly occurring at serine and threonine in the case of O-linked proteins, and at asparagine (Asn) in the case of N-linked glycoproteins.
